Downtown History & Facts

East Point, was established due to an 1847 Act incorporating the Atlanta and LaGrange RR (now Atlanta & West Point RR). It stated that its eastern most terminus should be at a convenient point along the Macon and Western RR (now Central of Georgia RR) between "the City of Griffin and the Town of Atlanta". This exact location is marked by a bronze disk set in a concrete post. This point of reference was used, as part of East Point's charter in 1887, to establish the limits of the town, all beginning from this point. East Point is sometimes candidly referred to as "The Point".

East Point boasts what many cities long for... location, location, location. Located next to the busiest airpoit in the world, Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, just nine miles from downtown Atlanta, situated between four major interstates: I-75, I=85, I-20 & I-285 and boasting its own MARTA train stop, East Point's location is hard to rival! In addition, East Point is located in the sought after ITP area (Inside The Perimeter) with abundant quality, affordable housing stock. These are just few more reasons we consider East Point a hidden jewel in Metro Atlanta!

Dick Land VelodromeDid you know...
The Dick Lane Velodrome was inspired by a group of residents and City officials who visited the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. It was one of only two in the U.S. when it was constructed in 1974. It served as a training facility for the 1996 Olympic Games. It is currently the second steepest concrete track in the country and one of the most unique in the world!

Fire TrucksDid you know...
The City of East Point acquired the first fire truck in 1910 and the City was the first municipality in the Southeastern United States to put into service two state of the art "green" bio-diesel fire trucks (lovingly named "Inferno" and "Iron Man" by area students) in 2011!

125th Birthday

The City of East Point celebrated its 125th birthday in 2012 with a series of special events and a magnificent fireworks display given to the City as a birthday present from the East Point Main Street Association

According to the 1920 Atlanta City Directory, the upper portion of the building on the corner was occupied by Dr. T. F. Guffin (physician) and Dr. J. A. Yeast (dentist) while the lower portions were Christians Pharmacy and W. F. Upchurch Meats. The next building going south was occupied by the East Point Post Office and R. D. Moore (grocer) and the next building (2791 Main Street) was the Bank of East Point.
